All year round in the tropics.<br \/>\n<strong>Gestation period:<\/strong> 10-11.5 months.<br \/>\n<strong>Birth rate:<\/strong> one calf per year.<br \/>\n<strong>Birth weight:<\/strong> 10 kilos.<br \/>\n<strong>Dive depth:<\/strong> 70 metres, maximum 300 metres.<br \/>\n<strong>Submersion time:<\/strong> 10 minutes.<br \/>\n<strong>Maximum speed:<\/strong> 60 Km. \/h.<br \/>\n<strong>Teeth:<\/strong> 80-120 small conical teeth in each jaw.<br \/>\n<strong>School size:<\/strong> 10-200.<br \/>\n<strong>Size:<\/strong> 1.7-2.6 metres.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Population:<\/strong><br \/>\nUnknown. In our area it is becoming a difficult species to find.<br \/>\nTheir sighting levels are lower than the pilot whale and the striped dolphin.<br \/>\nIn the Pacific (due to tuna fishing) and in the Black Sea (where, alone, accidental catches exceeded 100,000 in 1998) they have a high mortality rate. This is a matter which needs to be sorted out because many animals die needlessly each year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to identify a common dolphin:<\/strong><br \/>\nHour glass-shaped design on its flanks<br \/>\nThe area in front of the flanks is yellow-coloured.<br \/>\nIts nose is longer than a striped dolphin&#8217;s.<br \/>\nWhite belly and dark back.<br \/>\nBlack dorsal fins although some individuals show whitish colouration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Habitat:<\/strong><br \/>\nAll the seas in the world in tropical and temperate waters.<br \/>\nIn this area, it lives in open, deep waters (normally between 1,000 and 2,000 metres).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Behaviour: <\/strong><br \/>\nIt is a highly active, gregarious species, forming schools of between 10 and several thousand, generally in deep waters. The size of the school depends on what they are doing (hunting or resting) and the presence of prey.
